Old new table - restoration and renovation by own hands

If you have an old dining table that is dear to you as a memory, or you just want to economize smartly on buying new furniture, then you will have an interesting job in the quality of a restorer or decorator.

Keep in mind that restoring the kitchen table with your own hands is not the simplest thing and, in some cases, not justified, because not every table is repairable, and it's better to entrust the antiques to professionals. But more often, the right "upgrade" can bring your old friend back to life and transform it beyond recognition.

In what ways can I update the table?

Ideas for renovation and restoration of the kitchen table

To update your kitchen table yourself, you can use one of the following proven technologies:

  1. Traditional painting - this is the way we will look in detail in a step-by-step master class.
  • An interesting way of decorating and painting furniture is painting through the tulle - through it the table top is painted, and according to the principle of the stencil a lace pattern is formed.

Coloring the table through the tulle

  1. Ceramic tiles allow you to decorate a dilapidated, severely damaged table top and make it more practical - you can put hot and wash it on any surface.

Updating the table with mosaic

  1. You can update the old table in the decoupage technique. About him, we also talk in more detail.

Decoupage of the table

  1. Easy way to modify the table with your own hands quickly and budgetarily - paste it with self-adhesive film.
  2. Burning will allow you to update an unhardened wooden surface.

Master-class - 6 steps on the way to a new life

In this master class for a simple restoration of the dining table with our own hands, we will update, repair and repaint this old veneered table with a moderate number of defects.

Restoration of the table by yourself - before and after

So, to update the kitchen table you will need:

  1. grinder or sandpaper of large, medium and fine grain, as well as glasses, a respirator and gloves;
  2. alkyd enamel paint of the desired color (or other desired coating, for example, stain), as well as a flat non-shed paint or art brush;
  3. primer for wood and a small roller / brush for priming;
  4. wax paste or lacquer.

Step 1. Inspect and repair the parts

Carefully inspect all the fixtures in the structure and the defects of the countertop - how much the veneer is stratified or the tree is damaged.

Restoration of the table with your own hands

If the table is a little loose, then you just need to tighten all the screws. If it requires more serious restoration, then you need to completely disassemble the table, reinstall all the details, or clean and sand all the grooves and joints so that the new adhesive can be seized better, fix the glued parts with clamps or screws, and then remove them after 15 hours, when the glue dries completely.

  • Sometimes the substitute needs replacement not only because its parts are decayed, but also because the legs can completely modify your old table. For example, if before the legs were simple, now you can replace them with beautiful carved balusters.
  • When deconstructing furniture, do not forget to mark the place of installation of each of the details, so you will not get confused and will quickly cope with the task.

Step 2. Remove the old cover

Now put on goggles and prepare 2 kinds of sandpaper: coarse-grained for primary processing and fine-grained for smoothness. Prepare for a long and time-consuming work - removing old paint or varnish is not an easy matter.

Step 3. Fix cracks and chips

After grinding, carefully clean the table of dust, inspect the countertop and look for defects. Keep in mind that even the smallest damage will be noticeable after painting. All the chips and cracks should be locally sealed with a putty for wood or polyester putty, and then again polish the entire surface when the "patches" dry out.

To the note - the table cover with stain:

  • if the table top does not have strong damages, then you can not hide the natural beauty of the tree and cover it with stain, and then with varnish, shellac or wax. In the photo below is an example of a restored table with a table top, moraine in the color "Bleached oak".

Step 4. We ground and again grind

We continue our work. Now we need not only to clean the table, but also to degrease it. And after the table has dried, proceed in the primer. This stage is mandatory, as without it the paintwork will lie unevenly and quickly damaged. You can use an alkyd or shellac primer for wood. In this master class, the universal alkyd primer Zinsser Cover Stain (pictured below) was used, which dries in just 1 hour, protects the tree well and prepares it for painting. It costs about 500-600 rubles. But it is not sold everywhere. The table can be primed in 1-2 layers with a small spongy roller, and each layer must dry completely.

Restoration of the table - priming stage

When the primer dries (for 1 day), again, go through the countertop with a sandpaper or a medium-grain grinding sponge to smooth the primed surface and prepare it for painting. And do not forget to put on the respirator again!

Step 5. And now we proceed to painting.

Alkyd water-based enamel

It is very important to choose the right paint and its color. Avoid cheap paints, because this is a dining table, which means that the table top should well tolerate frequent washing, rubbing, blows and so on. In this case, a premium water-based enamel paint is used on a water-based basis with a satin finish, but you can choose a more environmentally friendly enamel on an acrylic base. Also, with a passion, choose a quality brush so that it does not shed in the process. Perfect is not painting, but a large flat brush.

The paint should be applied in 2 thin layers, while the finish layer should be left to dry for 3-4 days.

  • If you chose a dark paint color, then it is better to apply in 3 thin layers;
  • To create abrasions in style shibby chick The paint can be sanded in some places, for example, at the ends of the table;
  • Also, to create an "antique" effect, the table can be patched.

Step 6. Apply a protective coating

Varathane polyurethane varnish

As we have already said, you can protect the table surface with a varnish, for example, frosted polyurethane water-based (in the photo on the left there is an excellent varnish from Varathane). Apply it evenly in 2-3 thin layers, lightly sanding each layer before applying the next layer of varnish. Of course, all the layers before drying should dry completely (4 hours).

Waxing

The second option - protection with wax, which will make the countertop matte and it can be rubbed to shine. To do this, the wax should be gently rubbed with cotton cloth into the wood, then allow the first layer to dry for at least 1 hour. After that, polish the surface in a circular motion, and repeat the procedure 2 more times in one day. Well, now be patient and leave the table for 1 week, so that the surface has acquired the necessary performance properties.

Well, that's all - the restoration is finished, and the old table has found a new life in a fashionable white color.

And here's another interesting video from the program "Cheap and Angry" on the topic of restoration of the table top at home from improvised means.

Upgrade tabletop using decoupage

Decoupage

If you do not want to stop there or your desk is not seriously damaged, but just needs a little update, then you can decorate the table with drawings: paint it with acrylic paints manually, use stencils and stamps, or refresh the table with decoupage. Perhaps, it's this more popular technique of decor that we will consider in more detail, because decoupage will not only allow you to quickly and quickly transform a table or, for example, stylize it for Shebbie chic (as in the photo below), but also hide some defects of a dilapidated surface.

To update the table with your own hands in the technique of decoupage you will need:

  • acrylic primer and acrylic paints - if desired;
  • putty for beige wood;
  • grinder and sandpaper of different degrees of granularity;
  • rubber spatulas;
  • brush art flat and artificial;
  • matt or semi-matt varnish for wood;
  • napkins for decoupage or decoupage;
  • scissors;
  • adhesive PVA or special adhesive for decoupage.

What you need to decoupage a tree

Decor in decoupage technique can be started either after the priming and polishing step (see step # 4 above), or after painting and varnishing. Then choose a picture - it can be any image on paper or table napkins, as well as special rice paper for decoupage.

At first, marking is done, gently marking with pencil those places where images will be located. In a container of water, put the cut out paper image face down and stand for half a minute. Then the soaked image is laid out just like "face" down on a plastic file, and all the excess paper layers roll down. Then the picture is carefully smeared with glue and fastened to the table top. The file is not removed - through it the image is maximally smoothed.

The surface around the pictures is decorated with paint. The final stage of decoupage - varnishing with acrylic lacquer. After three days, the varnish will dry and the table can be fully used.

And finally, a selection of photos for your inspiration.
